SECRET BALI SOUND BOY: ANDY CHUNES

Andy Chunes quite possibly has the best name for a DJ across the whole island! You certainly need to know what you are doing behind the CDJ’s in order to carry that name off… and he DEFINITELY does that!

With residencies at Jenja, OMNIA and now the Vault where he has his own night on a Monday, is testament to the quality of this Amsterdam beat juggler.

Andy has also played in front of 10,000 people at the legendary Privilege club in Ibiza and talks about that moment and plenty more in the latest in the series of our Secret Bali Soundboys and is definitely worth checking out…

WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI?
I’m originally from Amsterdam (Holland). I have been here almost 4 years. Before that I came to the island very often.

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU SPIN AND WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
House and Techno. It can go from minimal/deephouse (romanian techno) to a more innervision (melodic techno) sound but with always a characteristic groove that people know me from. Sometimes I even like to play hard techno what they play at Berghain Berlin. But I love to listen to the sound of the ocean or jungle instead of listening to music in my free time.

WHAT RESIDENCIES HAVE YOU HELD IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS?
I have a residency at Jenja, from the beginning until now. That place feels special too me. On Sunday at I’m at OMNIA, beautiful place especially for a daytime party. And recently a residency and my own club night every Monday (SENIN) at this amazing place Vault.

WHERE DO YOU USED TO PLAY IN AMSTERDAM AND EUROPE IN GENERAL, AND ARE THERE ANY VENUES OR GIGS YOU HAVE PLAYED THAT STUCK OUT FOR YOU AND WHY?
Too many to mention, but too name a few:
Club Trouw (Amsterdam)
Wilde Renate (Berlin)
Privilege (Ibiza)

That feeling when I played for the first time at Privilege Ibiza (image above) and finished my set with 10.000 people going crazy. The nights when I played with my best friends at Wilde Renate Berlin. Sometimes the energy in the room is so special you don’t want to stop. So we didn’t and played almost the whole weekend. When I played a after hour set at Bungalup festival of 15hours. I took them on a special journey, I called it the Tunnel and people still remember and talk about it today.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT STATE OF PLAY OF THE MUSIC AND PARTY SCENE IN BALI?
Its getting bigger & bigger every year.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT PLAYING WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO TO RELAX AND GET LOOSE?
Love to spend my free time with Bali collective called PNNY (image below). We are a collective of unique artists who organizes partys and DJ’ing all over the island.

PICK 3 OF YOUR FAVOURITE TUNES OF THE LAST 12 MONTHS:

Adriatique – Ray

Malam:
Bog – Terra

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT BALI WHAT WOULD IT BE?
More green, less buildings.

IF YOU HAD A MILLION DOLLARS AND COULD CURATE ANY LINE-UP YOU CHOSE, WHO WOULD BE AMONG THE HEADLINE ACTS?
I would spend it on all the DJs of the island, who deserve it the most. They are all amazing with so much talent and hours and hours of practice. Can you imagine how special that’s gonna be? From the beginning untill the end only headliners.

Thank you, Andy! We’ll see you on the dance floor very soon!
